There is no shortage of mugs with paw prints, socks and novelty signs, and a lot of it ends up in a drawer. A small glass piece that can sit out on a desk or shelf is a different kind of gift.\n\nThis cat engraved crystal ball is a clear glass ball with a cat, a crescent moon and a scatter of stars engraved inside it. The cat sits with one paw raised toward the moon. It needs no batteries and no wall hook. It sits on its metal stand and catches the light in the room.\n\nThe listing also mentions pet memorial decor as a use. There is no wording on the piece, only the picture, so it carries no name or date.\n\nHow the engraving looks\n\nThe listing describes the piece as 3D laser etched glass. In the photos the design sits inside the ball, not on the surface, and shows as white against a dark background.\n\nThe cat is drawn in profile, facing left, with its tail curled out to the right. Small stars and crescent moons are scattered across its body, and more stars surround it. The crescent moon sits just above the raised paw.\n\nBecause the design is inside the glass, wiping the outside of the ball does not touch it. The listing does not go into the process any further, and it gives no figure for how long the piece lasts.\n\nThe material is listed as glass, described as K9 crystal, with a glossy finish.\n\nSize and weight\n\nThe listing gives the ball as about 2.3 inches (5.8 cm) across, with a net weight of 295 g. One photo shows it resting in an open palm, which is a fair guide to scale. The size photo rounds the ball to 6 cm.\n\nThat is small. It fits between books or beside a monitor without taking much room.\n\nThe engraved picture is small too. Expect a clear cat outline with a moon and stars, sized to a ball you can hold in one hand.\n\nThe stand\n\nA ball rolls, so the stand matters. The listing includes a metal stand, and the photos show it in a polished silver colour with three scrolled legs. The size photo labels it 5.5 cm (2.1 in) wide and 3.2 cm (1.2 in) high.\n\nThe ball rests on the ring at the top of the stand. It is not fixed in place, so you can lift it off to hold it or clean it.\n\nThe listing does not say whether the feet have pads. The photos show bare metal feet, so a coaster or felt pad underneath is a simple precaution on polished wood or glass.\n\nWhere to put it\n\nThe listing suggests a bedroom, living room or office. The photos show it on a table in front of books, on a book with candles behind it, and held in a hand.\n\nBackground makes the difference with engraved glass. The photos with something dark behind the ball show the cat most clearly. A pale or busy background makes the engraving harder to pick out.\n\nOne caution: a clear glass ball can focus strong sunlight to a hot point, the way a lens does. The listing gives no guidance on this, so it is sensible to keep it out of direct sun and away from paper or fabric.\n\nNo light base is listed, and none appears in the photos.\n\nWho it suits, and who it does not\n\nIt suits someone who wants a finished gift. It is sold exactly as shown, so there is nothing to choose and nothing to set up.\n\nIt is not the right piece if you want wording. The cat, moon and star design is already inside the glass and cannot be changed, and no engraving service is offered with it.\n\nIt is also not a portrait. The design is one sitting cat with a raised paw, not a likeness of a particular cat or breed.\n\nLooking after it\n\nThe listing gives no care instructions. A soft dry cloth is the usual way to dust polished glass, and the glossy finish will show fingerprints.\n\nWhen you lift the ball off the stand, do it over a towel or a bed, not a hard floor. It is glass and it weighs 295 g.\n\nIt is an ornament, not a toy, so keep it out of reach of small children.\n\nThe short version\n\nYou are buying a K9 crystal ball about 2.3 inches (5.8 cm) across, with a cat, a crescent moon and stars laser engraved inside it, plus a metal stand.
